Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is just that - an extremely marked emotional downturn during months where there is less sunlight, mainly in autumn and winter. The disorder affects about 2% of the United States population and can manifest itself in a desire to completely withdraw socially, and other extreme forms of typical lethargic symptoms of cooler weather and less sunlight. SAD is treated by light therapy and counseling, which can improve mood dramatically
