Each month the KolorscapeKonvoy blog trains bring you free kits and goodies themed to raise your awareness to something we feel you should know more about. This month we would like you to find out about Thyroid Cancer Research.

Although many cancers have decreased in incidence, thyroid cancer is one of the few cancers continuing to increase, setting new records of around 37,000 people newly diagnosed each year in 2008 and 2009.

When detected early, most thyroid cancers are treatable; however, some are aggressive and difficult to treat.

Cancer of the thyroid is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the tissues of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is at the base of the throat. It has two lobes, one on the right side and one on the left. The thyroid gland makes important hormones that help the body function normally.

Cancer of the thyroid is more common in women than in men. Most patients are between 25 and 65 years old. People who have been exposed to large amounts of radiation, or who have had radiation treatment for medical problems in the head and neck have a higher chance of getting thyroid cancer. The cancer may not occur until 20 years or longer after radiation treatment.

Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is just that - an extremely marked emotional downturn during months where there is less sunlight, mainly in autumn and winter. The disorder affects about 2% of the United States population and can manifest itself in a desire to completely withdraw socially, and other extreme forms of typical lethargic symptoms of cooler weather and less sunlight. SAD is treated by light therapy and counseling, which can improve mood dramatically
